Research

  • Research on development and implementation of algorithms for signal pre-distortion for compensating linear and non-linear effects of non-ideal hardware in real time high data rate optical communication systems

My research includes investigation of present and next generation high data rate optical communication systems. In particular, I investigate the various linear and non-linear effects which are present in the transmitters of such communication systems. The transmitter consists of a digital to analog converter, a driver amplifier and a Mach-Zehnder Modulator. All these components exhibit a low pass frequency response. An addition I/Q skew is also present in these components due to the unmatched electrical wires. Additionally, the driver amplifer and MZM are also non-linear devices.

In my work, we have studied ways to overcome such hardware limitations in software with a technique called Digital Pre-Emphasis/ Pre-Distortion. We have implemented an automated algorithm which is able to predict and compensate for these effects withuot any additional measurements. The gain obtained by the above method enables use of the same hardware for transmitting even higher baud rates and higher order modulation formats.
