Waveform Advancements and Synchronization Techniques for GFDM

Abstract:

 To achieve a new level of connectivity between people and machines, future wireless applications will demand higher requirements on data rates, response time, and reliability from the communication system. This will lead to a different system design, comprising a wide range of deployment scenarios. One important aspect is the evolution of physical layer (PHY), specifically the waveform modulation. The novel generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) technique is a prominent proposal for a flexible block filtered multicarrier modulation. 

This talk introduces an advanced GFDM concept, extending it towards the use of OQAM and introducing the novel frequency-shift OQAM-GFDM. Also, a new low complexity model based on signal processing carried out in time domain. With proper parameterization of the advanced GFDM, a unique modulation framework capable of emulation of other prominent waveform candidates in scenarios where they perform best is presented. In particular, for a subset of system parameters of the modulation framework, the problem of symbol time offset (STO) and carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation is investigated and synchronization approaches, which can operate in burst and continuous transmissions, are designed. 

Biography:

Ivan Simões Gaspar received his B.S.E.E. and M.Sc. degrees with emphasis in telecommunications from Inatel in 2003 and 2006, respectively. From 2003 to 2011 he was a technical supervisor and product manager in the R&D department of Hitachi Kokusai Linear. Since February 2012 he has been a research associate at the Vodafone Chair/TU Dresden working on robust non-orthogonal modulation schemes in the 5GNOW project and the RF Lead User Program with National Instruments.
