Prof. Gerhard Kramer

Welcome to the Institute for Communications Engineering

At the LNT (for "Lehrstuhl für Nachrichtentechnik" or "Teaching Chair for Communications") our research and teaching are concerned with efficient, reliable, and secure communications. We rely on information theory to guide our thinking and designs for codes and algorithms. Our core competence is information processing for wireline and wireless communications, but we also apply our tools to interdisciplinary problems where information plays a role, for example communications in biology and physics.

The chair has two research groups:

  • Gerhard Kramer's group studies information theory, coding, and signal processing. The current focus is on wireless and fiber-optic channels, and on network coding and turbo processing.
  • Norbert Hanik's group studies the physical layer of wireline communication systems, in particular optical and power line systems.

Both groups are interested in applying theory to accurate models, and in developing codes and processing strategies that promise to impact.

The LNT offers 16 courses and several labs and seminars:

  • 3 B.Sc. courses on Digital Communications and Wireless Channels
  • 9 M.Sc. courses on Information Theory, Coding, Wireless (LTE), Wireline, and Optical Systems
  • 4 courses for Teachers at Vocational Schools and Business Administration Students
  • 4 Practica, 2 Laboratories, and 2 Seminars

We offer several Bachelor and Master projects every semester, as well as "Ingenieurspraxis" and "Forschungspraxis" projects.
